The Edo period marks the move of Japan’s center of government from the thousand-year capital of Kyoto to Edo, or what we now recognize as Tokyo. With the ushering of a new era, five official routes were established during the reign of the Tokugawa clan. The most important of them all, the Tokaido Road, connects Tokyo and Kyoto along the east coast of Honshu, hence its name which means the “East Sea Road.”
Our Tokaido Trails tour is designed with the goal of bringing you on an inspiring adventure to the major stations along this route while presenting the many historic legacies of Japan. While it predominantly features the Edo period as the focal point, this itinerary also offers occasional glimpses to the present and the future, as well as the far past, including the Muromachi and Heian eras.
Some of the highlights of the tour are especially reminiscent of the journey that the nobles made along the route during the feudal era. For example, you will walk on a segment of the road in the post station of Hakone, and take a break in a centuries-old tea house. You will also celebrate reaching the final station with a lavish dinner accompanied by the famous geisha of Kyoto. Let the interwoven attractions and destinations that link you between times unfold an unforgettable story as you travel Japan with iLoveJapanTours!

Hakone, located just less than two hours away from Tokyo, was an important checkpoint of the Tokaido road. Your first destination is a reconstruction of the “gateway to Edo,” now a museum that displays many items related to its function as a checkpoint. The main highlight today is the walking course between Moto-Hakone and Hatajuku, being a preserved segment of the original Tokaido.
